When the Ayutthaya Kingdom came into power these hunts were converted into a public extravaganza and wild elephants were replaced with tame ones. The indigenous residents of Surin, the Kuy, have been traditional practitioners of corralling elephants and training them as working animals. The festival has its origins in the royal hunts which were conducted in Surin Province during medieval times. It so happens that the most skilled mahouts elephants live in Surin is located 450 kilometers from Bangkok, and every year there is a gala procession of elephants. Elephants in Thailand and indeed, in Asia - is a faithful companions and helpers person throughout life. Although, in relation to the Thai elephant this term, of course, does not apply.
